MAY – WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MONTH!

Spring will finally arrive in Wisconsin for sure. After the return of winter we had in the middle of April, it’s great to know (with 99.9% certainty) that we won’t have to put the bikes away because it’s snowing. Hallelujah!

There are rides planned all over the district and we’ll have our usual ROMEO breakfast and dinner rides this month too. If you want to join some other chapters for rides check the district website and click on the events tab. All the events for every chapter in the district are listed on the calendar. As always the district Dust Off is this month too. It’s on the 17th & 18th at the Glacier Valley Campground near Cambria. (details are on the district website).

There are two dates that we want to bring to everyone’s attention:

1.The May social is not the last Sunday of the month as is usual, it’s Sunday May 19.

  1. The date for the chapter fundraiser in June has been changed to Saturday the 22nd. We had to move it from the previously announced date (Sat. the 15th) because Sportland2 changed the date of their open house.

Unfortunately, this now puts us in conflict with the District Rally in Wisconsin Rapids. We were really looking forward to the rally since it no longer conflicted with our annual Fall Fling, and now we find ourselves with conflicting dates again. Sometimes it seems like you just can’t win!

Any chapter G members who weren’t planning to attend the district rally are certainly invited to come see the open house and bike show at Sportland 2.  Also, if you’re not going to the rally we could certainly use your help with the fundraiser. It’s a lot of fun and it brings in money that we use for the chapter all year long.

By the time May arrives we all should have had the chance to get out on the bike and knock off some of the rust that always accumulates over the non-riding winter months. Even if the weather is a little cool in May it’s still better than it’s been in April. It’s really time to get out an put some quality miles on the old iron (OK – mostly plastic) horse.

Hope to see you all at one or more of the upcoming chapter and district rides this month.

 FROM THE DIRECTORS:

It’s been Spring officially now for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, living in the Milwaukee area, and having that gigantic cold puddle east of us, there’s no way to predict whether it will feel like Spring or more like an extended mild winter. One can only hope.

We can be sure, however, that there will be enough mild days to get the bike ready for the riding season and find at least a few days to get out and knock off the winter induced rust. April is the perfect month to find an empty parking lot and get in some “low speed practice”.

March was a full month for chapter G activities. We again had our annual Winter Get-away in Baraboo at the Best Western motel. As always they treated us very well. We had use of the conference (read Party) room.

We had some great socializing and a few adult beverages were consumed

IMG_1771

There was also a fair amount of Sheepshead played. Christen even played this year, having been coached by Ken in advance. (She claims he was an absolute drill master.)

Then we had a great visit with Homer Deahn, the sculptor who has worked on many projects for the Circus World Museum.

IMG_1764

He has become really expert at carving horses for circus wagons and carousels.

We got to spend a great hour at his studio. He had lots of stories about his work, and also the many really neat things he’s done over the course of his life. He’s quite a unique person.

Please make a note of the change from our usual ‘last Sunday of the month’ social date for May. As we’ve done for several years, we’re having our May social the 2nd last Sunday to avoid the Memorial Day weekend.

 FROM THE DIRECTORS:

Well, we’re now a whole month closer to riding time.

March is often a teaser month. Sometimes it gets fairly warm and we think we’re almost in spring, and then winter roars back and reminds us that we live in Wisconsin. At least the daylight hours are really increasing and it’s obvious that we’re past the worst of winter.

We had a very busy month of March. It started with our annual Winter Get-away in Baraboo which went well (thanks, as usual, to Christen) and included the Duck Pin bowling challenge from Chapter N. There will be more information on that in next month’s newsletter.

One of the great things about the month of April here in Wisconsin is that we always get at least a few really nice days (compared to Jan. & Feb.), when the more hearty among us get the bike out on the road and knock off some of the rust that developed on our riding skills over the winter. A little individual “Parking Lot Practice” is always a good thing in early spring.

Things will really start to liven up next month when the riding season actually gets going. There will be more and more rides and other events coming in May, and once June arrives we’re in full swing.

Really looking forward to all that!

FROM THE DIRECTORS:

For some reason, even though it is in fact the shortest month of the year, February usually seems to take forever. Part of it has to be that we’re really tired of winter but there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. We also often get some of the coldest days of the year in February.

One consolation is you can actually see that the nights are getting shorter and the days longer.

We want to thank Mark Hansen for stepping up and accepting the position of chapter Treasurer. It’s an essential position (without a treasurer the chapter would have to disband) and we truly appreciate Marks commitment. Also thank you to Dan Gorecki for the years he held the position and the work he did for the chapter.

Our Holiday party on January 5 was a great success. Everyone had a really good time, the food was excellent, and the fellowship was wonderful. (And it turns out we were lucky we booked it when we did. Sprecher’s closed permanently the next Wednesday.)

We’re back in the swing of things again with the end of February and the beginning of March being filled with fun things for our members to participate in.

Our annual Chili Dump lunch comes in conjunction with our Feb. social (2/24). The very next weekend (3/1-3/3)  we hold our annual Winter Get-away in Baraboo. As always, Christin has some interesting and enjoyable things planned for us. Then, on Sat. 3/9, Chapter N has challenged us to a Duck Pin bowling tournament, with the Chapter Challenge trophy riding on the outcome.

The trophy has been in chapter N’s possession since last August. It’s time for it to come back home to chapter G where it belongs.

As you can see, even though we can’t ride together yet, we’ve still found many ways to spend time with our chapter G friends. It’s what makes being part of GWRRA so worthwhile.

Why not join us and find out how fulfilling it can be to participate in so many different things with your fellow Wingers.

FROM THE DIRECTORS:

HAPPY 2019 TO ALL OUR FRIENDS IN CHAPTER G

Winter is truly and sincerely upon us. The bikes have been put away for a couple months already, but there is one consolation once we get to January. We are actually over the hump. While it may be hard to actually see it, the days are getting longer and the nights shorter. Obviously we have a long way to go till Spring, but we are on the down slope now.

Following our hiatus in December we’ll be starting up strong again in January, with our first event being the Chapter’s Christmas/New Year’s party at 5:30 on Saturday Jan. 5 at the Sprecher’s restaurant in Bayshore Mall. We’d really like to see many of our members join us for an enjoyable evening of fun and fellowship. (And good food!) If you haven’t already done so, please contact us to let us know you’re coming so we get a fairly accurate head count.

In addition to the party on the 5th we’ll be back in the swing of things with a ROMEO breakfast“ride” and our monthly dinner “ride” and, of course, we’ll have our monthly social on the 27th. All the details are located above.

We’re looking forward to a fun filled 2019 with lots of things to do together and hopefully we’ll get to meet many new friends in chapter G.
