October 2014

We are a family organization based in the metropolitan Milwaukee Area. We have been in existence since 1983 and we are the largest GWRRA chapter in the state of Wisconsin. Besides our love of Gold Wings, we love to have fun. You will commonly see our members riding together and doing non-motorcycling events. We enjoy meeting new people and we accept new members with open arms. If you have a technical question, most likely someone in our group will be able to assist. Our activities range from safety fairs, weekend camping/hotel trips, winter getaways to fight those winter non-biking blues, hockey games, fundraisers, dinner rides, and the list goes on and on. So, put down the kickstand and take a ride through our pages. If you happen to be in the neighborhood on a social night, stop in, we’d love to see you.

From The Director:

Fall is truly and sincerely here and our 2014 riding season is reaching its end.

The good news is that there are always some nice days in October which invite rides into the Wisconsin countryside. We get some beautiful colors during the fall which are really a joy to view while riding.

While our riding opportunities may be decreasing we are still planning many events so we won’t be losing track of our friends in Chapter G. From the activities section above you can see that we’re still busy and sharing our time with each other.

There is some news concerning our upcoming 2015 Winter Getaway. It will be held, as usual, on the first weekend in March (6th – 8th) and, as usual, will be in the Wisconsin Dells area. In 2015, however, we were forced to change our destination. For the past several years we had been staying at the Skyline Motel. Unfortunately, the Skyline no longer exists. It has been purchased by Olympia resorts. So we’ve re-located our get together to the Wintergreen Resort, located at 100 Gasser Rd. in Lake Delton. They will hold a block of 15 rooms until February 23. We’ve negotiated a group price of $79/night + tax. We will also have a hospitality room at our disposal. To get our group price be sure to tell the reservation clerk that you are with GWRRA Chapter G. The reservation number is 1-800-648-4765-1.

We had our annual Fall Fling at Konkapot Lodge near Bowler WI. The weather could have been better, but all of us who attended had a good time and as always, Bob Gorecki did a fantastic job with the Friday night shrimp boil and the Saturday night turkey fry and ham bake. Thanks Bob, and also thanks to all who brought goodies to share with every one. We also were able to have two great campfires which were presided over by our Empress of Embers Diana Gorecki.

At the October Social we’ll draw our cards and find our winners for the 2014 Circle Tour. If you haven’t already done so you can still fill out your entry form and give us your entry fee. You don’t have to be there to draw your cards, but the answers must be turned in at or before the October social and someone else can draw your cards for you.

Your chapter officers are working on setting up a calendar of events for next year. We’d really like to have a fairly complete calendar set by November. In this project we really need your help. Please continue to think of places you’d like to ride to and new places for our monthly dinner rides. It would be great if you also came up with rides you’d be willing to lead. We’re all involved in our chapter, so let’s all pitch in with ideas and planning. This really is a case of “the more the merrier”.

Hope to see you at any or all of our events this month and in the months to follow.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns about anything involving chapter G please feel free contact us at the contact points listed at the top of this newsletter.

Sunday Oct. 28 – Chapter G Social WaterStone Bank 3:00PM. 6560 S. 27th St. Oak Creek

From The Director:

It’s hard to believe August is behind us already. Unfortunately that means our riding season is starting to dwindle considerably, but we often get some great riding weather through September and even into October. Here’s hoping for that to happen this year.

We had a very eventful August. Our members participated in the MS Best Dam Bike Ride, and the Ride for Kids at the beginning of the month.

Several members attended the Region E Rally in Wisconsin Rapids. We want to thank Pam Lingford for the rug she made and donated for a raffle to raise money for the American Cancer Society to honor our dear friend Diana Gorecki. Thank you also to Dick Choyke who set up the raffle and to the people at Country Sports Inc. for allowing Dick and Pam to hold it at their Honda shop. They raised over $200 for the ACS. Great job everyone involved.

Our annual Corn Roast/Picnic on the 16th went very well. The weather was great and the food was really tasty. Thanks Bob Gorecki for supplying and cooking the corn again. You did a great job as always. Also a big thank you to Lynn and Noah Borkenhagen for thinking up and running the games. It was a lot of fun for all of us.

One of the most anticipated chapter events is coming this month. Our annual Fall Fling will again be held at Konkapot Lodge in Bowler Wi. Officially it’s Friday the 12th through Sunday the 14th, but many of us will be up there before Friday.

As has become our tradition, we’ll have the shrimp boil on Friday night and the turkey fry/ham bake on Saturday night. Anna’s Sunday morning leftover fried breakfast has become a really fine end of the weekend event too.

And of course our nightly campfire get-togethers, presided over by Diana “The Queen of Embers” Gorecki, will keep us all warm and happy. Along with the possible consumption of some adult beverages as well.

As is noted above there won’t be a dinner ride in September. We’ll start them up again in October, however.

At the October social we’ll hold the drawing for the Chapter G 2014 Circle tour. You don’t have to be there. Someone else can draw your cards, but you will have to turn in your registration and answers before the October social to have a chance to win. Another reminder: Please bring your registration and entry fee to a social. Do not plan to give them to an officer at some other chapter event. Entry forms, fees, and answers tend to get lost if they’re not given at a social.

Another ongoing chapter event that has just started is the ROMEO Breakfast Club. That is a group of our members who are Retired Old Men Eating Out who plan to find someplace new and interesting to ride or drive to once a month for breakfast and fellowship. At the inaugural ride to the Hen House in Eagle the group decided on the basic format for the future. On the second Wednesday of each month we’ll meet at 7:45 am at Andy’s gas station on 51st and Rawson and leave at 8:00 am We’ll put names of places we’d like to try in a hat and draw a name for the next month’s ride at our social. There’s no need to make any calls or send any emails. If you want to go show up. If not don’t. No problems either way. Despite the name (and to avoid being called sexist) our wives and female significant others are invited also, Only time will tell if any decide to join us. The September destination, on Wed. the 10th, is the Country Rose Cafe and Bakery. It’s located at the junction of Highways 45 and 20 in Racine county near Union Grove. John Hickman will lead the ride. Anyone who wants to join us should meet at Andy’s gas station on 51st and Rawson in Franklin. John says the prices are reasonable and the bakery is really good.

The chapter officers are in the early stages of planning next year’s calendar. If you have any rides you might like to lead or someplace you would like to go for a chapter dinner ride, or just something you’d like the chapter to do for fun, PLEASE let us know.

We’re always looking for ideas from our members.

Finally, there was the announcement at the August Social about the change of venue for our Winter Get Away from the Skyline Motel to the Wintergreen Resort which is also in the Dells.

Have a great month of September and get some riding in while you still can.

From The Director:

Wow, was July a busy month!

Wing Ding, a dinner ride to a great Barbecue place (Double B BBQ in West Allis), rides lead by John Hickman and Terry Worth, and the chapter social.

We want to thank John and Terry for leading their rides. We also want to thank Bob & Ginny Schattschneider and Dick Choyke for their presentations before our July social.

As Dick stated during his presentation your input is needed to decide what subjects will be discussed at future seminars. Please reply to the e-mail you received asking for your ideas on what are the most needed presentations.

Then there was the roll out of the new chapter website. If you haven’t already done so, please take a minute and check it out. The address is the same as the old one (www.gwrra-wig.org). It’s quite easy to navigate, and while it’s not a finished product yet, we think it’s off to a good start. There will be other features added and improvements will be made on what’s already there. Keep checking in and watch it grow and improve. We’ve just added a link to all the pictures Willy Risser has taken since the beginning of the year. Check out the link at the top of this page (Pictures) and click on the hyper link you’ll see on the page. Willy has done a great job of capturing the essence of what our chapter is all about.

As busy as July was, August promises to match or maybe even exceed it.Two very important events are scheduled for August.

First is the Region E rally in Wisconsin Rapids on the 7th – 9th, which will bring in Wingers from all over the central part of our great country. Region E includes the states of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North & South Dakota, and obviously Wisconsin. To the best of anyone’s knowledge this is the first time both Wing Ding and a region rally took place in the same state in the same year. Of course, Wisconsin is the best district in all of GWRRA, so why shouldn’t we be the one to do this first?!?

The kickoff event of the rally will be an ice cream social on Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, sponsored by Country Sports Inc., the Wisconsin Rapids area Honda dealer, located at 10520 Hwy 13 South.

Starting with the ice cream social, and running until Saturday at noon, Dick Choyke, Pam Lingford, and other helpers, will hold a raffle at the dealership for a handmade rug donated by Pam in honor of our dear friend Diana Gorecki. Every cent raised by the raffle will be donated to the American Cancer Society and “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”. The winner will be announced at the rally site on Saturday afternoon. You do not have to be present to win. The rug will be sent to the winner if they are not present.

The second important August event is our annual chapter corn roast/picnic. It will again be held at Jackson Park Site #10, in Milwaukee on Saturday the 16th starting at 10 AM. The chapter will provide brats, hot dogs, buns, chips, and a limited amount of soda. We ask that everyone bring a dish to pass. All chapter G members, and members of any other chapter, are cordially invited to join us for a fun day of games, food, and fellowship.

And we have our monthly dinner ride and social as usual. If you have any questions about any of our upcoming events check the calendar on the website or feel free to contact us. (Our contact info is listed above.)     We sure have lots of opportunities to get together with our friends and fellow riders. That, of course, is what GWRRA is really all about. FRIENDS for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge.

Looking forward to seeing you all at our August events.

 From the Directors:

AIN’T SUMMER GRAND!!

It’s compensation for what we have to put up with all winter.

The first order of business is to send out a big THANK YOU to all the chapter G members who worked at our fundraiser on June 7. It was a great success. In addition to the chapter making a good amount, we were able to make substantial donations to both the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (Ride for Kids) and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (Amer. Cancer Society). Great job all of you who came and helped. We worked hard, but we had a lot of fun doing it. We’d also like to thank those members who came and bought some brats or hot dogs and contributed to the cause. Also a big thank you to Terry Werth who, having won the 50/50, bought frozen custard for the workers after we finished.

As you can see from our events list things really get busy in July and it carries over right into August. We’ll certainly have plenty of great destinations for rides all summer long.

Hopefully, most of you had a chance to learn the best way to pick up a fallen Wing  at the demonstration before our June social on the 29th. Thank you Dick Choyke and Bob & Jinney Schattschneider for an excellent presentation.

Hope everyone has a chance to visit Madison for Wing Ding sometime from the 2nd through the 6th. It’s going to be quite a party, and you’ll have an opportunity to meet fellow Wingers from (literally) all over the world. See you there.

Have a great July and as always: Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down.

From The Directors:

This month it’s the guys turn. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY all you Chapter G dads.

SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE!  WOOHOO!!!

We’re finally able to get out and ride regularly. There’s joy in Cheeshead country again.

Thank you John Hickman for setting up and leading the ride to the Dairyland Classic MC races in Plymouth on May 30. Thanks also to Willy Risser for setting up and leading the ride to Fox & Hounds for brunch on June 1.

Starting this month we’ll have plenty of chances to get out and ride our great state (and for some of us) some other states in our wonderful nation as well. Before we start riding all over the place, however, let’s all remember that the chapter fund raiser will be held on June 7 at Sportland 2 on 13th St. just south of Rawson Av. It’s an opportunity for all our chapter members to get together and have some fun while helping the chapter and two deserving charities. We’ll be splitting the proceeds with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (Ride for Kids) and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer which is affiliated with the American Cancer Society.  We can sure use help from ALL our members since this will be raising money to benefit the WHOLE chapter. Please plan to show up on the 7th to help out your fellow chapter members.

The 2014 Chapter G Circle Tour information was presented at the April and May socials. The 2014 mileage contest is running now too. If you entered in 2013 we have your starting mileage for 2014. If you didn’t enter last year get your bike’s mileage to one of the officers ASAP. Remember, there’s no entry fee for the contest, so why not enter. If you need more info on either contest you can find it on the chapter website under the “Tours” link, or contact Rich & Sharon Winkler.

As was mentioned last month, Wisconsin has drawn the “trifecta” in 2014. Beside our usual district rally (Wisconsin Dells – Sept. 12 & 13), this year both Wing Ding (Madison – July 2-5) and the region E rally (Wisconsin Rapids – August 7-9) will be held in the Badger state. In addition to giving us great reasons to go for a ride, it’s also a chance to meet and get to know GWRRA members from all over the country. In the case of Wing Ding you’ll even see people from all over the world. To the best of anyone’s knowledge no other state has ever hosted the international, region, and state rallies in the same year over the 35+ year history of GWRRA. It’s also an opportunity to help make these rallies a success. If you’d like to meet lots of other members and have a great time please consider volunteering to help at one or more of the events. If you’ve never done it before, you’ll be amazed how much fun you have while interaction with so many other GWRRA members. Contact Rich & Sharon Winkler with any questions. (See above for contact info.)

Please take a couple minutes to check out our chapter website and take advantage of the links to both the district and national websites to learn about what’s planned by chapters all over the state, region and country. There are a host of possible things for a Winger to do out there.

Hope to see you at our events this month and many others in the future.
